Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is not sent anywhere or stored. Close the tab and it is gone.
How are words counted?
With the browser's language-aware word segmentation, so languages written without spaces, like Japanese and Chinese, are counted properly. Hyphenated words such as “well-known” count as two words, as in Google Docs; Microsoft Word counts them as one.
Why can the character count differ from other tools?
Many tools count code units, so an emoji or an accented letter can count as two or more. This counts what you see: 👍🏽 and é are one character each.
